Passed peacefully at Northumberland Hills Hospital at the age of 96. Rupert George Hartford was predeceased by his wife and best friend, Marion (December 18,2023). Beloved father of Anita (Terry Shannon) and Ian Hartford. Dear Grampa of Garrett and Paige Shannon. Rupert was number 2 in a family of 13. He is predeceased by brothers Leo, Alan, Tim (Jim), Cecil, Bill, and Doug and sister Lenna. Survived by brothers Lowell and John (Jake) and sisters Eunice Sine, Mary Moore and Madeline Jensen and many nieces and nephews.
Rupert was a farmer in Roseneath for many years having shipped cream, eggs, beef and crops. He also worked erecting double wide trailers He was a teacher having taught us all how to parallel park a vehicle, how to fix anything, how to square dance, how to be a good neighbour, how to tend a garden, how to make maple syrup, how to build “things “and just how to be a good person.
He rarely complained, just took what the world threw at him, dusted himself off and got to work.
He was a proud member of the Masonic Lodge, Roseneath Fair Board, Roseneath United Church, and Roseneath Volunteer Fire Department for many years.
In 1997 he and Marion “retired” to their new home in Roseneath where he bowled 2-3 times per week, was the local “handyman” for the neighbours and had a huge garden.
His world was turned upside down when Marion passed away and he realized he could no longer live independently. He moved to Rosewood Retirement Living and then to Landmark Assisted Living in August 2024.
Visitation will take place on May 19 from 4-7 pm at MacCoubrey Funeral Home, 30 King Street East in Cobourg with Funeral Service to be held May 20 at 11 am at Roseneath United Church 11943 County Road 24 in Roseneath.

Anita and Ian and families. My condolences having learning of Ruperts passing. A good man, I always enjoyed speaking with. A good life well lived and now joined your mother, Marion up there.
A wonderful neighbour, so helpful in the community, a great dad and darling “Rup” to Marion. Such a good friend to Doug and Marg.
Rupert was a wonderful neighbour, friend, and such a gentleman. He got so much enjoyment working in his garden. We missed seeing him hoeing, digging, planting and harvesting his vegetables. He made the world a better place.
Anita, Ian and family, Your Dad was a quiet and gentle man with many gifts. Treasure your wonderful memories, he will be missed.
Anita and Ian, I am so shocked at the passing of your dad. He was a wonderful man always helping others. 96. Wow! Such a good and productive life he led and he was so proud of you both and Paige and Garrett. Prayers and thoughts with you, always.
