Mary passed away peacefully at Ed’s House Hospice Care Centre in her 80th year, following a lengthy battle with mesothelioma. Throughout her illness, she shared her experience with others to raise awareness of the dangers of environmental pollutants, toxins, and chemicals.
Mary was the beloved wife of Douglas Smith and a devoted mother to Michael Guerard (Trixia), and to her stepchildren Kim (Dan), Heather (Curtis), and Greg (Valerie). She was a loving Nana to Gavin, Zoe, Charlie, Evan, and Arthur. Mary was the cherished sister of Rosaleen (Chris), Peter (Lindsey), Margaret (Robert), and Catherine (Peter), and was predeceased by her brother Harry (Debby). She was an adoring aunt to her nieces and nephews.
Mary cherished and nurtured life-long friendships wherever life took her – from her early childhood in Manchester, England and Northern Ireland, to Napanee, Ontario, her education at Hotel Dieu Hospital/Queen’s University, and throughout her years living in Sault Ste Marie, Oshawa and Cobourg. In every place she called home, she formed deep and lasting connections, carrying those friendships with her throughout her life.
Mary was an accomplished professional as a nurse and academic. She led a vibrant life, staying active through tennis, biking, hiking, pickleball, and golf, and enjoyed the opportunity to travel and see the world with her beloved Doug. They delighted in bringing their friends and family together creating lasting memories. Mary brought the gift of her love of life to all.
Mary was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed by all who knew her.
In recognition of the wonderful care that Mary received, memorial donations to the Northumberland Hills Hospital Foundation or Ed’s House Northumberland Hospice Care Centre would be appreciated by the family.
