Stephen Lawrence Johnston

September 23, 1961 - March 10, 2026

Peacefully at Northumberland Hills Hospital, Cobourg, in his 65th year. Beloved husband of Kat Ross and loving father of Kyle. Cherished son of the late Glenn and the late Barbara (nee Wheeler) and dear brother of Melanie (Philip) Mason, Scotty, Heather (Brian) Billings, Gregory, and brother-in-law of Linda (Ted) Bouman and the late Bill Ross. Uncle to Emily and Chelsea, Brenan, Paige, Raine, Alex, Matthew, and Rachel and Great-Uncle to August, Briana, Benjamin and Primrose. Stephen will be sadly missed by his several aunts and uncles as well as Kyle’s half-sister, Shania Wickman, and her children, Logan and Deegan.
Born in Ottawa , Steve moved across western Canada as the firstborn son in a military family. Unsurprisingly he joined the Navy in his twenties. Serving time on both coasts, he was afforded the opportunity to see the world and make many friends along the way
Steve and Kat married in 1999 and happily found their forever home in Cobourg. Along the way came Kyle and so many cherished animal companions and eventually retirement.
Steve's life was full. Upon retirement he was able to devote even more time to his antique vehicles, motorcycles, collecting Coca Cola memorabilia, listening to his vast and carefully curated vinyl collection, his church, delivering Meals on Wheels and being involved with Legion activities. Throughout it all he enjoyed a robust social life centered on those interests. Most often with a timmies in hand and a pup by his side.
Many thanks to the awesome staff at NHH Emergency, ICU, Dr. Ben Musa and Dr. Kwok.
There will be a memorial service on Saturday March 28th,at Calvary Baptist Church Cobourg. Visitation from 1-2p.m. and the service at 2p.m, followed by light refreshments in the lower hall. Please feel free to wear a hawaiian shirt or bright colours. Steve would have loved that!
Donations to the Calvary Baptist Church Cobourg or to the Cobourg Legion Branch #133 would be appreciated

MESSAGES OF CONDOLENCE / DONATIONS

Carmel Scott - March 17, 2026

Kat, Kyle and all of Steve's family, I am so sorry to learn of Steve's passing. He was a joy to chat with, at Extendicare. Steve used to sit and chat with my father and I, while he was on a break from his job as a cook. He would sit with us and tell us great stories of the Navy, and his love of his truck. Mom, and the rest of the residents would be eating their dinner, and it was Dad, Steve and I, for about 15 minutes each evening. He was a man who loved his family, that was evident. Rest in Peace, Steve. Say Hi to Lynne for me.

Rita Zeran - March 17, 2026

Steve was larger than life - a person whose presence could light up any room and whose laughter was truly unforgettable. His kindness, generosity, and strength of spirit left a lasting impression on everyone he met. Steve will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but the memories he gave us will live on. Our most sincere condolences to Kat, Kyle, and the entire extended family. Our thoughts are with you during this difficult time.
