Russell Netherton

February 27, 1912 - July 4, 2005

Netherton, Russell Lloyd Passed away at Cobourg July 4, 2005. Loving father of William (Shelley), Robert (Janet), Richard (Beth) and Alexander (Brigitte). He will be sadly missed by sisters Ruth and Bette (Wencel); sisters-in-law Mary, Evelyn (Jim) and Edith; his nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Russell will also be missed by many friends he made during his short residence in Cobourg. Russell was born in Toronto in 1912 and when he was about six years old his parents moved to Charlton in Northern Ontario, close to their families who pioneered in that area. After being burned out in the great fire of 1922, his family moved to Englehart where his father started a grocery business. Russell began his long career in the food business at age 14 by working in his father's store. In 1933 he became manager of the local Dominion Store, and it was there that he met his future wife, Dorothy. Their marriage, in 1940, started a loving union that lasted 63 years. After serving with the RCAF he rejoined Dominion as manager at Timmins, Ontario, and retired at Toronto as Division Manager in 1975. One highlight of Russell's career saw him in Montreal directing Dominion's expansion in Quebec and Atlantic Canada. A talented and tireless manager and organizer with a human touch, Russell won the respect, admiration and friendship of many during his long career. His retirement at Niagara-on-the-Lake was the start of another career, that of President and supporter of the Niagara-on-the-Lake Historical Society. He was also an active member of Amnesty International and a founding member of the local chapter of the Ulyssean Society. Both Russell and Dorothy raised the art of grandparenting to new heights. Russell enjoyed physical activities including golf and taking daily walks. Always active, he discovered cycling in his early eighties, and even later, kayaking with Wil Tranter at Stoney Lake. A memorial service and reception for family and friends will be held at Saint Mark's Anglican Church, 41 Byron Street, Niagara-on-the-Lake, at 1:00 PM, Friday, July 22. In lieu of flowers, a contribution may be made to the Niagara-on-the-Lake Historical Society & Museum, P.O. Box 208, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario L0S1J0, or to a charity of your choice.
