Graham Killmaster Stratford

August 23, 1931 - April 1, 2024

Graham Killmaster Stratford passed away peacefully on April 1st, 2024, surrounded by his family. He is predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Gabrielle (née Talbot), his brother Philip (Jacqueline), and his sister Nora (Roger). He is survived by his six sons: Richard (Sylvia), Philip (Qian), Graham (Sylvia), Michael (Ruth), Andrew (Heather), and Will (Suzanne), as well as sixteen grandchildren.

Graham was born on August 23, 1931 in Sarnia, Ontario. He was the second of three children to Reginald and Phyllis Stratford. A devoted family physician for almost 50 years in Cobourg and Whitby, he was a gentleman who naturally connected with people. Dad was a renaissance man who cared for and welcomed all.

While working as a doctor at a Canadian Air Force base in France in 1958, he met Gabrielle. They were married the same year after a storybook romance including trailing a bottle of wine in the water while rowing around Lake Como, Italy.

Dad lived 50 wonderful and peaceful years at Stillbrook, the family home. He lived his faith as a parishioner of St. Mary’s Catholic Church (Grafton) and as a long-standing volunteer with the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Knights of Columbus, and many other charities.

Beyond the professional and social accolades, Dad saw his greatest achievement as his family. He and Mum cultivated a home of hope and peace by loving each other, their family, their community, and their surroundings. Through their work in the garden and woods, their enduring hospitality, and their warm and open hearts, Dad and Mum lived a life both timeless and boundless. Dad's example inspires his children, grandchildren, family, and friends. He is and will be greatly missed.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations be made to Ed’s House Northumberland Hospice Care Centre.

Deepest condolences to the entire Stratford family.

Julie Simpson - April 24, 2024

Sending your family deepest condolences on the loss of your father. I have vague memories of his time as my family doctor. I had the pleasure of reconnecting with him not long after I joined Western University on the Development Team for Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. I relished the chance to chat with him - not just as a member of the Meds Class of 55 - but my parents were so fond of him. My Mum - Isabelle - sold him the first family farm. My Dad - Tom - did masonry work at Stillbrook. His memory was keen - he shared these details with me when I connected in 2020. We shared stories and photos by email. I feel blessed for that brief connection. His kindness and family pride were unmistakable. What a remarkable man and legacy. Deepest condolences to your family. Julie (Sandiland) Simpson

Our condolences to the Stratford family. Dr. Stratford was my families physician for many years at the Cobourg Clinic. He was so kind and thoughtful. Always smiling when he saw you. I’ve always had fond memories of him as my family doctor and how natural it came to him to care for you. One time as a teenager on a visit to the clinic, I noticed he had a cold. After taking care of me I said to him, “Dr. Stratford I want you to drink lots of fluids and get some rest too”. He smiled and laughed and said ok. He was one of a kind and my family and I are blessed to have had him. Our thoughts and prayers to the family. Teresa, Antonio, Pierina, Joanne and Enzo Guida

Such a beautifully rich life Graham lived! And this wealth was evident in the warmth he showed my husband and I each and every time we visited him and Gabrielle. Graham and I shared the impulse to go and serve in Africa as well as a deep love of the natural world. He will live long in my memory as one of the very best of men. I’m sure the fine qualities that made him who he was, will be echoed in his remarkable family. Our very deepest sympathies go out to them as they live with the loss of such a wonderful father.

So sorry for your loss.My condolences to you all. Growing up in Cobourg he was my family doctor and a wonderful doctor he was. I became very ill at the age of two after travelling to Europe. My parents went to see many doctors but they all dismissed my illness as the flu. One night they decided that this was more than the flu and running a fever of 103 they took me to the hospital where I was lucky enough that your father was working at that time. He examined me and ran tests and diagnosed me with spinal meningitis. He saved my life. He told my parents had they waited till the morning there would have been nothing he could have done. He was truly a wonderful doctor.

Graham was one of the finest persons I ever knew. Calm, softspoken, honest, welcoming and friendly to all, strong and steadfast in his beliefs but never argumentative, always respectful of the views of others, hardworking, greatly respected in his community and a caring family man. Both his parents had disabilities; from them he learned the strong sense of values that he maintained throughout his lifetime. Gay grew from childhood into a healthy, strong, lean and handsome man, yet humble and charming. I always had the greatest admiration for him.

I interviewed him at the Cobourg Clinic when I was looking for a new family Dr. I remember he laughed as I don't think anyone had done this before. He was a wonderful and caring Dr. He was a quiet soul and had great respect for all the nurses that assisted him in the delivery room. He was so proud of his family and his boys that followed in his footsteps. Condolences to all his family. He will be sorely missed.

To the Stratford Family - In 1987, as a young Registered Nurse, new to Cobourg, I found employment at Streamway Villa Nursing Home. Your Dear Dad was our 'Medical Advisor' & I fell inlove with him instantly, he was the kindest/most gentle/genuine & deeply caring Doctor, so rare to find. I ran into your Dear Dad, last November, I expressed to him how sorry I was to hear of his Dear wife's passing (your precious Mom) in his so soft/gentle voice, he said that he misses her immensely & does get lonely at times, I told him that I had recently retired & that maybe I could pop in for a visit, his repy in his kind/gentle voice, replied "I would love that Katie" I will forever feel saddened that our visit never happened. What a wonderful reunion, it must have been in Heaven, on Easter Monday, your Dear Dad & Mom, together again 😇 😇

Graham really loved the outdoors and apparently he was the one who sparked Frank's interest in making maple syrup and, heating with wood. Although I hadn't known Graham well I was struck by his love of history and that magical room of antique electric trains. With the flick of a switch Frank and I were transported to a land of adventure!

Dr. Stratford was the perfect example of a caring, wonderful doctor. He made a house call to us once when we lived out in the country, in Coldsprings, delivered our son and made call backs to check on improvements to our conditions. Dr. Michael Dillon - April 4, 2024

I am grateful to have spent some of my formative years frequenting the Stratford homes in Cobourg and Grafton. Dr. & Mrs. Stratford offered a world of adventures, and encouraged me and Rick to supplement our schooling with reading British Comic Books, organising "Perfume-Making Contests" for our Grade 6 Class, and writing and producing crazy plays at school. I recall having been so very impressed that Dr. Stratford even took the time to help Rick and me build the 8 foot tall "Time Pumpkin", the feature prop for our play of the same name. At some point I realised that Dr. Stratford was not JUST the boys' dad, but also a Family Doctor, who looked after some of my own family members. I still recall thinking to myself how great it was that someone could be a Doctor, a Dad, a Jeep-Driver, a Toboggan Run-Builder, and an Outdoor Skating-Rink builder, all at the same time! This insight proved pivotal to me, as I began to consider my education options through High School ... and decided to try and become a Family Doctor myself... but without giving up the opportunities to get the most out of family, friends, and community. And now, 40 years after my graduation from Queen's Medical School, I have the opportunity to pass along my condolences AND appreciation to the whole Stratford family, and especially Dr. Graham and Mrs. Gaye Stratford, for their profound influence on contributing to the person I am today. Dr. Michael Dillon, Shawnigan Lake, BC

Michael and I were so sad to hear of Graham's death He had looked frail the last time we saw him but there is still a tremendous sense of loss when someone of whom you are so fond dies. It is very hard to believe that he and Gay are no longer here. They were a true unit together. Their personalities complimented each other and they were immemsely proud of their family - rightly so. Graham and Gay were so kind to us when we arrived in Cobourg in the 1970's. I have memories of Graham helping us saw down a Christmas tree in freezing weather and of Gay serving us tea in a warm kitchen. She once proudly showed me a very early photograph of her and Graham. They made a handsome pair. Both created such a rewarding life together with family and friends. Graham was a truly caring and gentle physician. He delivered our son in 1977. We shall miss him. He was a unique and true gentleman. Our deepest sympathies to all the Stratford family. .

We want to express our condolences to you Andrew, Philip ,Richard,Graham, Michael and Will on your father’s passing. In 1976 , we met “Dr . Stratford” and Ari accepted a position at the Cobourg Clinic where he continues to this day. It was because of the welcome we received from both Gabrielle and Graham in those early years that helped us decide to spend our own lives in this wonderful community. He set a standard for the country Family Doctor who worked night and day, delivered babies, provided anaesthesia, made house calls , worked in the ER , never losing his empathy, humanity and love of his vocation, and of his family. May he rest in well deserved peace.

Dear Stratford family. Our truly deepest sympathy on the passing of such a caring wonderful soul. Besides helping me “deliver” our daughter he also home visited when she was ill. He also looked after my mother when he “retired” and took on a Whitby institution. A coffee visit with my sister & I to go over her autopsy as Alzheimer’s was a relatively new “disease”. He was a true doctor in every sense of the word. God Bless you🙏

Philip, Andrew and family, So sorry to hear of your dad's passing. He's now reunited with your mother for eternity. Your dad was an integral part of the medical community and always devoted and working long hours. Your dad along with the newly accredited Dr. Michael Jones delivered me. Your dad said to my mom "I thought you would have been in here a few days ago." I opted to wait until Thanksgiving. You both have the same work ethic as your dad and your dad was so proud of all of you and your brothers. Treasure the memories in the difficult days ahead and your dad will never be far away. Keep sharing his stories and he'll live on forever. My deepest sympathies to each of you.
