Passed peacefully at Ed’s House Hospice surrounded by the love of family Saturday, March 30, 2024 at the age of 88. Devoted and deeply loved husband to Beverley Spooner (nee Stark) for 66 years. Proud father to Tammy (Michael) Haynes, Robert (Jacqueline) Spooner and Brian Spooner. Papa of Mitchell (Autumn) Hickerson, Zach Haynes, Ryleigh Spooner, Sam Spooner, Jennifer (Tim) Lane, and Joshua (Laura) Alls. Bob was born November 13, 1935 to Clara and Arthur Spooner. He is predeceased by his sister Shirley (Roy) Welsh. Bob was exceptionally devoted to his community and held a love of all things sport. He spent his years umpiring baseball reffing hockey, and coaching hockey teams. He was an active member of Legion Minor Softball and the Probus Club. He also loved to play hockey and was a devoted Toronto Maple Leaf’s fan. Bob was an active and lifetime member of the CCHL and spent many years devoting his time to their many sports dinners and banquets. If you happen to be a Cobourg Cougar, Port Hope Panthers, Lindsay Trent Muskies or the WHA Birmingham Bulls fan you will know the bold and triumphant voice of Bob as he broadcast their games through CHUC-FM. Perhaps you even tuned into Spooner on Sports. Bob gave so much of himself to his community he assisted in raising money for Pad 2, the community lights for Donegan and Legion Fields. Bob even went so far as to dye his hair red to raise money for United Way. He had one of the most generous hearts that thrived to help others. Bob also spent a great deal of time investing in change for a better future. He was the trustee on Northumberland and Newcastle Board of education and then worked many years for the Cobourg Council. After many years of dedicated hard work, he was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal and Bob was incredibly honoured by this achievement. The family would like to extend their most sincere gratitude to Dr. Cunningham, and the team of compassionate members of Ed’s House as well as all of the staff members at Palisade Gardens for all of your gentle care and kindness. A celebration of life in memory of Bob will be held at MacCoubrey Funeral Home Sunday, April 7, 2024 from 1:00 – 4:00 PM. A private family burial will be held at Cobourg Union Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Ed’s House Northumberland Hospice Care Centre or Church on the Hill.

You will be missed by SO many but your inspiration lives on thru the many people you touched. I reflect fondly on your support of your favourite sports teams and how you challenged my judgement on mine. If anyone could have made me change my mind it was you. I am so glad we were able to reconnect albeit only briefly. You will be missed my friend but never forgotten.
