Percy Leonard Latchford

January 3, 1932 - January 18, 2024

Percy, born January 3, 1932, to Orick Latchford and his wife, Ida Lillian Thompson, was the middle child in a family of five with two older siblings, Ruth and Earl and two younger, Alma and William (Bill). He grew up in the Belleville area attending public school in Sydney Township and high school at Belleville District Collegiate.
Jobs were plentiful after the war and Percy tried several until he found one in the electrical trade which became his life’s work. In 2020 he received his 65 year pin as a member of the IBEW - the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

In March, 1951, he met Joyce Bright at an evening event in Campbellford. She became his “Forever Love” and they married August 16, 1952. Together they raised three children, Linda, Lenard and Laurie; and after Joyce retired they raised three grandchildren, Dianna, Patrick and Ashley with their father’s help. Because Percy loved his wife the children grew up in a safe and happy home environment.

In 1958 Percy & Joyce bought a small home on Dale Road and he honed his construction skills by tripling the size of their home. He also designed and built night tables, bookcases, desks, cedar chests, toy boxes and cupboards. His masterpiece was a china cabinet, a gift for his wife for their fiftieth wedding anniversary. A meticulous worker and a perfectionist - the furniture is destined to become family heirlooms.

Their home welcomed family and friends who shared many home cooked meals around the dinner table. Family travellers along the 401 often took a break in their home. They hosted family birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas events and holiday weekends. On one weekend 21 family members slept overnight when snow-clogged roads made their drive home impossible.

Percy’s hobbies included coin and stamp collecting, golfing & gardening.

A long-time member of Fellowship Baptist Church, he served in the Sunday School, as a deacon, a youth leader, and many years as an usher. He willingly shared his faith with anyone who would listen and an oft quoted Bible verse was John 14:6 [Jesus said] “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Percy’s outstanding traits of loyalty, honesty, integrity and his love for his family made their world a better place. He will be sadly missed by his beloved wife, Joyce, his three children Linda (Paul Kulba), Lenard (Patricia), Laurie (Kim), and his nine grandchildren, Jennifer (Ken Ravenberg); Jamie Alexander (Shawna); Judith (Scott Grimley); Shawn Latchford (Colleen); Stacey Latchford; Dianna Bath (Tyler Rupert); Patrick Latchford (Katie); Ashley (Ken Jansen) and the late, Hunter.

His one sister, Alma (Harold Greggs) survives him, as do 21 great grandchildren and many nephews and nieces, as well as his sister-in-law, Marjorie Orbell.
It is comforting to know that Christians never have to say good-bye. We can look forward to a family re-union in heaven.

A visitation will be held Thursday, January 25, 2024 from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM at MacCoubrey Funeral Home, 30 King Street East, Cobourg, ON K9A 1K7. The family will be having a private graveside service at Cobourg Union Cemetery Friday, January 26, 2024. Friends and family will be welcomed to the Fellowship Baptist Church Saturday, January 27, 2024 at 11:00 AM followed by a reception and time of fellowship following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made by cheque to Fellowship Baptist Church (please enter "Building Fund" on memo line of cheque) or online by credit card at fbcchurch.ca - Online Giving - Reaching the Region or Ed’s House Northumberland Hospice Care Centre.

2 Timothy 4: 7-8

I have fought the good fight
I have finished the race
I have kept the faith.
Now there is in store for me
A crown of righteousness which the Lord,
The righteous judge - will award me
On that day – not only to me, but
Also to all who have longed for his appearing.
