Peacefully at the Northumberland Hills Hospital in Cobourg on Friday, June 30th, 2023, Herb Bond in his 97th year. Cherished husband of Jeannine Bond (nee Hamel) for over 73 years. Beloved father of Mervin Bond (Tracey), Murray Bond (Deborah), Judith Rideout (the late Mike O’Kane), Julie Kennedy (Mike). Loving grandfather of James (Amy), Shannon (Laurence), Matthew (Lynn), Angela (Shawn), Amber and great grandfather of Hailey, Alexa, Ainsley, Tyler, Jake, the late Harley, and great great grandfather of Bentley, Hadleigh, Blair. Dear brother of Wilda Lamb (Alvin) and predeceased by his siblings Arthur, Edward, Harold, Merril, Garfield, Annie, Mervin, Donald.
Herb was born in Tomstown, northern Ontario in 1927. He was part of a large family. He lost his father when he was 10 years old. He left school at the age of 14 to help support his family. When the war broke out he followed his older brothers and volunteered for the army at the age of 17. His mother had to sign to allow him to enlist. Herb trained with the Canadian Technical Training Corp (CTTC) as a mechanic. After the war, Herb returned to Tomstown where he met the love of his life Jeannine. They were married in 1950. They then moved to southern Ontario (Cobourg area) where they purchased property and built the family home on Danforth Road where they have lived and raised a loving family for almost 70 years.
Herb began his carpentry construction career after moving to southern Ontario, becoming a master carpenter/cabinet maker building hundreds of homes in the Northumberland Hills area. He also joined the team to build the Darlington Nuclear Facility. Herb had many talents. With his military training, he became an excellent mechanic keeping all the family vehicles humming including major repairs.
In addition, Herb and Jeannine enjoyed camping in the roughest sense. Roughing it well into their eighties, probably as a result of their rugged upbringing in northern Ontario. Quality time with the family was always his utmost desire.
It will be hard to not have you with us. We will always try to make you proud. We all miss you so much. Until we meet again.
“Take er easy” Dad’s parting words. Love you always.
Special thanks to the Northumberland Hills Hospital and the Palliative Care Unit for the special care provided.
A Family Visitation will be held at MacCoubrey Funeral Home in Cobourg followed by cremation with later interment at Fairview Cemetery in Grafton. Those wishing may make a memorial donation to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
