Susan Speirs

February 22, 1945 - April 13, 2023

Susan died peacefully, at Northumberland Hills Hospital on April 13, 2023, after a short fight with cancer and a longer battle with hydrocephalus. Alan Butler, Sue's partner of 43 years; her son, Andrew, and his wife, Mary Catherine, were present as Sue's wishes for the donation of her body to the University of Toronto were fulfilled. Our thanks go to the doctors and staff at the hospital for their professional and caring help. Born in 1945, in Nottingham, UK. Sue left three brothers, Patrick, Guy and Stephen, and their families. In 1969, Sue decided to immigrate to Canada and subsequently had a varied career, mostly in legal businesses. Later, Sue set up her own company providing the same talent. Sue and Alan met in 1980. At that time, Sue was a keen tennis player, which resulted in Alan joining the same club. There followed many years of holiday travels, mainly by river boat, to many destinations in Europe and once to Russia. Later, most holidays reverted to stays at resorts in the Caribbean. Sue will be missed by Alan, Andrew and Mary Catherine; as well as her stepdaughter, Tracey; and grandchildren, Julia, Gregor and Mackenzie. At Sue's request, there will be no funeral service. A Celebration of Life will take place at MacCoubrey Funeral Home, 30 King Street East, Cobourg, Saturday, May 6, 2023, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

MESSAGES OF CONDOLENCE / DONATIONS

Diane Millington - July 17, 2023

Hello Alan, Andrew and Mary Catherine, Very belatedly I am adding my condolences on the loss of Sue. We worked together sporadically at Ten Thousand Villages, and it was always a pleasure when our shifts coincided. Sue was a fun person to be around and to work with. Her wit was quick and she was very observant. I am sorry to know that she was so uncomfortable in her last months and know you must be missing her greatly over these months. Please accept my late but sincere condolences. Diane Millington

Audrey E. wilson - May 5, 2023

Alan, I was so sorry to read of Sue's passing. It is a long time ago since you folks entrusted me with your "beloved Henry". Sue was so understanding and kind regarding his situation - so typical of her caring nature. Do treasure your memories. Audrey

Jennifer Darrell - May 5, 2023

I am so sorry Alan. I did not know Sue well but we always had lots to talk about when we did meet and I so admired her handling of her health challenges - with grace and determination. I know you will miss her terribly. My sympathies to you and your family.

Joanne Teague - May 5, 2023

My most sincere condolences to you and your family Alan. I was so sorry to learn of your loss. Sue was a very special lady, beautiful inside and out. Sue was very kind hearted and had many attributes. One that I remember all to well was her opening your home to neighbours for special occasion dinners, like Christmas, Easter etc. It was the first I had heard of the neighbourhood dinner guests she called the "ways and strays". It was such a beautiful gesture inviting those who had no family. Sue was a very special lady who will be missed. Rest in peace Sue.

I worked with Sue at Ten Thousand Villages for several years and she was always such a wonderful and positive presence at the store. Her good humour was infectious and she was one of the loveliest and kindest people I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. I looked forward to when she came in every week and I will greatly miss seeing her smiling face when I come to visit. My deepest condolences to Alan and family - she was truly a special person.
