Douglas Lane Smith

June 6, 1946 - March 4, 2022

Thank you to all who prayed and supported Doug through his illness. A special thanks to the staff of the Cancer Care Center at the Northumberland Hills Hospital who treated him with great care and kindness. Our entire family received a huge amount of love along the way from the Acute Myeloid Leukemia diagnosis in August. Doug passed at home in peace beside his loving wife of 55 years, Donna, his high school sweetheart. His two sons Phil and Dean were so blessed to have had such an amazing Dad! He also adored his daughter-in laws, Lisa and Jane and was a fantastic grandfather to Erik, Alicia, Alanna and Breann. He will be greatly missed by his sister Brenda, brothers Brian, Ron and Larry. He joins his mother Margaret, father Norman (Keith) and brothers Donald and Bob. So many other family, friends, colleagues, fellow competitors, athletes and other patients/clients will miss him and have also sent their condolences and fond stories to the delight of our family!

Dr. Douglas Lane Smith accomplished so much. He received his business degree before changing paths to a Master's degree in Psychology. He pioneered research in addictions with caffeine, alcohol and nicotine. He went on to his doctorate and clinical specialty in Psychology. Doug was a lifelong learner and wrote copious notes that would fill an encyclopedia on how to achieve the professional mind. He taught at universities, directed a Children’s Mental Health Centre, was a school board psychologist and trustee, had a large clinical practice in marriage, stress and counselled business executives and professional and Olympic athletes. He was the “ProMind”. He relished (rejoiced) helping his family and so many others be their best. He was very proud of his family’s accomplishments and those he helped as amateurs to reach the professional and Olympic level. Doug competed in pro golf mini tour events. He was skilled at so many sports- he played Junior hockey, golf, all racket sports, downhill and cross-country skiing and more.

He loved competition and how it could bring out the best in a person. Doug loved family time and travel. He and Donna took the boys on countless trips all over North America, the UK and Europe. He took his wife cruising to see much of the rest of the world including a 78 day voyage. Doug loved adventure.

A celebration of life will be held Sunday, June 5, 2022, at the Dalewood Golf 7465 Dale Road Cobourg, Ontario K9A 4J7 from 1:00 - 4:00 PM.

Donations can be made to Fair Share Food Bank and the Cancer Care Unit at Northumberland Hills Hospital, Cobourg with that designation specified.

Don’t worry Dad, we will look after Mom for you! Love you always! Rest in Peace.

We are just seeing Doug’s passing now. We are so very sorry for your families loss. The pictures on your Facebook page Phil are testament to the wonderful family times you shared. Doug was an amazing guy. We golfed many a weekend with Donna and Doug at OGC always enjoying our time with them. When my sister died, your Dad reached out to both me and Rich to support us in any way he could. I loved running into to him at OGC when he came down for a game. David and Gayle Hobson - March 21, 2022

Dear Donna, Phil, Lisa, Dean, Jane and Grandchildren, Our hearts reach out to you and your family as you navigate this heavy loss of Doug. As I reflect on the years I'm reminded of the many wonderful memories I have spending time with my cousins as the most memorable and unforgettable. One such memory is frozen in time for me. It was a summer day and I went to join our Smith cousins in Grandpa Lane's barn just knowing this was going to be fun. We swung on ropes like Tarzan from one side of the barn to the other high in there air. Brian, Doug and Bob, fearless and fun loving encouraged me to go higher and higher to shrieks of laughter and squeals of excitement. We had the time of our lives! When I think of Doug, I will picture him flying high up in the rafters free and happy. David and I are thinking of the wonderful moments that we shared with Doug and will celebrate the incredible life he lived and the difference he made to us. Love,David and Gayle xo

Judy Cyr - March 15, 2022

We are so sorry to hear of Doug's passing. Donna and family we cannot say how much Douglas Lane Smith helped our family learn, grow, and love through great times and troubling times. Without Doug's professional guidance our lives would be much different than we are today. One session we laugh about even today, along with our tears. Benny & I had decided to take a trip to Hawaii and to take along our oldest grandson Carson who was about 10 years old at the time. Nathan is Carson's younger brother who was about 7 at the time and we felt he was too young to be that far away without Mom & Dad. He also had the vocabulary and persuasion tactics of a seasoned politician. We couldn't make him understand why he was being left behind. We decided to take Nathan to a family session to ask Doug's assistance to help us deliver our decision to Nathan. Well, Nathan had an answer for all of Doug's logic and questions and at the end of the session, Doug said 'I guess he goes to Hawaii'. And he did. Nathan is now 18 years old and still has very strong debate abilities that always reminds us of this session with Doug. Our family will always remember Doug with great fondness, and appreciation for all he has done for our family professionally and as a friend. Sincere Condolences Donna & Family. Benny & Judy Cyr & family

My deepest condolences to the Smith family. Doug was an impressively intelligent person, caring and knowledgeable. We met at the Oshawa Golf Club, and I think one of the first rounds Doug ever played there was with me. He was a very good player but his interests extended far beyond golf. I worked on his campaign when he ran for the provincial parliament in the 1980s. I knew both Phil and Dean when they were boys. Although we saw less of each other after Doug and Donna moved away from Oshawa, I would run into him occasionally at the club. My thoughts are with Donna, Phil and Dean and their families at this time of mourning. Truly a great loss.

We met Doug and Donna during our retirement years …actually Doug never retired…in New Smyrna Beach Florida. And, we all just clicked! They became super good friends. We always looked forward to the winter months to share fun times with them. Doug was just so good at everything he did…and, he was so willing to help others. If it weren’t for Doug I would probably still be in the sand trap at Sarabande golf course in Leesburg, FL.! Doug enjoyed life, he enjoyed his work, his family, friends, and most of all spending quality time with his lovely Donna. Doug will always be in our thoughts. He had a wry sense of humor and we loved to see that little boy smile he had. His entire family have our condolences. We love you, Doug. Till we meet again. ❤️🙏🏼
