After a brief illness, Richard Bateman passed away peacefully at home with his family in Port Hope, Ontario, where his late father Dawson and stepmother Jean lived for many years. Rick was a loving husband to Beverly (née Marshall) for more than 60 years, and proud father of Ryon (Lucy) and Craig (Jenny). He is survived by his dear sister Faith Stirling and brother David, predeceased by his brothers Peter and John, and fondly remembered by his many nieces and nephews.
Born in the Verdun neighbourhood of Montreal to Dawson and May (née Martin), Rick attended the University of New Brunswick and Mount Allison University, where the star football player met his future wife Beverly. They raised their family first in Beaconsfield, a suburb of Montreal, and later in Newmarket, Ontario before settling in Port Hope more than 30 years ago. Always friendly and ready to share a story and a few laughs, Rick enjoyed the many connections he had in Port Hope and in Ontario’s antiques and collectibles community, in particular his friend John Bristow.
With too many doctors, nurses and caregivers to name individually, Rick’s family extends their appreciation to all the healthcare workers and volunteers who assisted him in his final days, especially during these trying times. In lieu of flowers, family and friends are encouraged to make a donation to a cause of their choice, and to raise a glass in Rick’s memory.
My condolences to Ricky’s wife & family from someone who lived in the west end of Verdun in the fifties & knew Ricky from his years at Verdun High School. I graduated from VHS in 1954 & from Mount Allison in ‘58. Please feel free to write me. Sincerely, Tom Scott (Now living in Williams Lake BC)
My thoughts are with Rick’s family. I knew him quite well in the old days of the antique world. He was always a friendly and knowledgeable gentleman, and enjoyed a good laugh as well. So sorry for your loss.

I raised a glass this past weekend to my Uncle Richard. I remember his hearty and booming laugh. Most memorable of those echoed from the family holiday gatherings at Aunt Faith's before we all scattered on our separate ways down the 401 or other roads. My condolences to Auntie Bev, Ryon, Lucy, Craig and Jenny. May he rest in peace - Love Robby, Andrea, Sacha & Ana.
