Gordon West peacefully passed away on Oct. 13th at Palisade Gardens, a retirement community in Cobourg, Ontario, where he was predeceased by his loving wife Doreen (Smith). Born Oct. 29, 1931, he was days short of his 90th birthday.
Son of the late Percy and Velma West (Davey), brother of the late Lloyd West (Dorothy), brother-in-law of Ron Smith (June) and the late Warren Smith.
Gordon is lovingly remembered by many nephews and nieces: Gary West (Julie Ann), Judi Peers (Dave), John West (Kathy), Jim West (Jamie), Ray West (Kelly), Robert Gordon West (Joanne), David West (Angelica); Joanne Smith-Fleisher (Gabriel), Greg Smith (Danielle), Michelle Labatte (Ron), Cheryl Chapin (the late Don), (the late Brad Smith, and the late Alayna Golightly).
There are numerous great-nieces and great-nephews and many great-greats as well.
Gordon bought his Grandpa Davey’s farm on Community Centre Road in Baltimore when he was nineteen and he farmed that acreage with Doreen for many, many years. They also shared a love of tennis and badminton, travelling, and supporting and improving their local community. The Lime Kiln Trail, the Baltimore Arena, and Jacob’s Ladder (that famous wooden staircase leading from lower to upper Baltimore) all benefited from their philanthropy.
Gordon also belonged to Big Brothers; the Senior Games Committee; and the cemetery board of Baltimore United Church, the church he and Doreen attended for most of their lives.
In keeping with Gordon’s wishes, a small graveside service will be held at Baltimore United Church Cemetery.
A special thank you is extended to the staff at Palisade Gardens for their years of
compassionate care and support and to the dedicated team at MacCoubrey Funeral Home.

I always enjoyed the Lime Kiln Trail, which would not be there except for the Wests. I worked with Doreen years ago at Stewart, Mitchell and Macklin, and was there to wish her a good retirement - which she and Gordon made the most of. They were good citizens and amazing people
Our hearts are seriously broken. Gord was Rick's big brother and even after Rick aged out they stayed in contact. As an adult we spent many afternoons with Gord, Doreen and our children. They absolutely adored the kids and the feelings were returned. Gord often told Rick he would out run him when he was 101. We guess he will be whizzing by us now with angel wings. We loved Gord and Doreen. They were a big part of our family and always welcomed us with open arms and an abundance of love. Rest in peace Gord. Until we all meet again. We love you.
To the family of Gordon, He was a lovely man and I enjoyed getting to know him through a mutual interest in history and genealogy. I wish to express my sympathy to you at this time of loss. I wish you all the best, Anne Burnham PS what a fabulous drawing of him!
Our condolences to the West family on the passing of your uncle.

I'm so glad I got to know Gordon through our connection to Baltimore United Church. He was truly a lovely man.
Gordon lead an interesting life....as he and Doreen were so involved in community projects as well as farming and travel. I appreciated reading his obituary. Although we were first cousins and grew up on neighbouring farms, we connected more in retirement years. I was impressed that he prioritized Bridge time at the Palisades. My thoughts are with the family at this sad time.
Sorry to hear of the passing of Gordon. I have fond memories of spending Christmas and New Years dinners with him. Thoughts and prayers are with the West family. Jean(Blezard) Walker - first cousin Calgary.
To all of the West family, so sorry for your loss. We sure had great times out there in Baltimore when we were young.
To the West and Smith Families - so sorry to hear about Gordon's passing. He will be missed. So many memories of our times together. Gordon and Ray talking pigs and Doreen and I talking anything but !!! Really brought back memories seeing the picture of him. It was done on our trip to New Orleans in Jackson Square. Great friends for many, many , many years. Thoughts and prayers are with you all. God Bless.
Gordon and Doreen were our neighbours before they moved to Palisades where we visited them on several occasions. We were very fond of them both and are saddened to hear of Gordon's passing. He was a lovely man.
We are sorry to hear of Gords passing. He and his wife were so kind to us when we moved to Baltimore and they were always trying to clean up the Lime Kiln Trail , something we found so hard to get the area to keep up on. Our thoughts are with the family.
We will cherish our memories of Gord. Such a brilliant, kind, gentle man he was. Rest in Peace friend.
Our association with Gordon and Doreen has spanned our entire lifetime with a special connection through our beloved Baltimore Church. The Smiths(Doreen) lived beside us and we own two Smith farms on Racetrack Road. Gordon and Doreen are the best example I know of humility, goodness, and kindness. They in their active roles in community are sorely missed. Sincerely Gord & Marg Jibb
Many fond memories of visiting Gordon and Doreen on their farm, and of Christmases together in Camborne and/or Baltimore. My last time in Ontario I saw them at a family gathering at their place, another in Gore's Landing, and we also went to a Church dinner together. (First cousin of Doreen's.)
Sad to hear of Gordon's passing. He was a kind and gentleman. We have lots of great memories of both he and Doreen when we were part of the Baltimore Church community.
I was raised in Baltimore and I was related to the Atanasoff family just up the hill from Gordon and Doreen. We crossed paths many times. Both of them were always pleasant and easy going. Always had a project to work on. They were also very health conscious. Driving by, I always looked to see the pigs he raised outdoors. "Big Brother" Gordon's "Little Brother" loved to be at the farm. God Bless!
