Joan Kathleen Bennett

February 9, 1959 - September 24, 2021

Joan Kathleen Bennett passed away peacefully on September 24th, 2021 surrounded by her loving family, after a brief and very courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. She is survived by her beloved husband of almost 30 years, Steve, her children Samantha (Jeremy) and Andrew, of whom she was so proud, her best friend Kathy, her mother-in-law Sheila Bennett, and a cadre of cousins and friends. Joan was predeceased by her parents Gordon and Peggy Henry, and her father-in-law Colin Bennett.
Joan was born on February 9th, 1959 in Scarborough, Ontario and clearly was destined for a life of travel and adventure. After a childhood filled with fun and friends, music, school and some great vacations, Joan had a successful career in business. Then, Joan met Steve and the rest is history. She truly came into her own as a wife and mother who loved her family with all her heart.
Joan loved to travel. Throughout her courtship with Steve, their round-the-world trip, her first move to England, their move back to Canada, then back to England, then back to Canada (phew!), not to mention all the awesome family vacations, Joan’s love of travel was fulfilled.
Joan’s passion for life was evident in her warmth, kindness and generosity, which surrounded her friends and family like a warm hug. She was an incredible cook who never shied away from trying new recipes and adapting them on the fly to make them her own, often using vegetables, spices and even garlic grown in her own garden. Joan loved to have family and friends around her table at home, or at her cherished cottage with her dearly beloved dogs Barney and Jessy.
To the end, Joan’s generous spirit was evident in her concern for all of her family and friends. Her light will shine for us always.
The family would like to thank her family doctor, Dr. van Loon, Dr. Jeyabalan and the team at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC) Cancer Care Team for their expertise during her illness, and Dr. Mulé and the staff at Ed’s House, Cobourg for their compassionate and excellent care.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, October 16th, 2021 from 1-4pm at MacCoubrey Funeral Home, 30 King St. East, Cobourg, Ontario. Due to Covid protocols attendance will be limited and hence by invitation only.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joan’s name to Ed’s House Northumberland Hospice Care Centre or the PRHC Cancer Care Centre.

Laurel Scriven Flieger - September 28, 2021

I knew and loved Joan since we met almost 50 years ago in Grade 9. She was the most natural, genuine, generous, funny, fun, happy, tough, loving, thoughtful (and all kinds of more adjectives!) person whom I’m proud and grateful to have been able to call my friend. What matters is what sort of mark you leave behind. There’s a Joan-sized mark in my heart and I will miss her, very much. RIP my friend. It’s your turn to rest.
