Alexander "Curly" James Duncan Rutherford

December 26, 1958 - December 30, 2020

Curly Passed away suddenly just four days after his 62 birthday on December 30, 2020
The proud owner of Rutherford Financial Services, owner of Rutherford’s Ambulance for many years and co-owner of Rutherflo Transportation. Curly left behind his wife of 34 years Cheryl Rutherford, daughters Sydney Mattson (Cory), Shelby Rutherford (Frankie Dog), his beloved grandson Micky Alexandra John Mattson, brother Pat “Snap” Rutherford (Shelley), sisters Cindy Jakobi (Don), Paulie Deseure (Terry) and Peggy Minifie (Craig), mother-in-law Margaret “Peggy” Boudreau, sister-in-law Annette Woolmer (John), brother-in-law Mike Boudreau (Donna). Curly also cared deeply and loved his many nieces and nephews, Katie, Mikel, Hailey, Allie, Courtney, Shawn, Curtis, Mitchel, Riley, Jamie, Casey, Sam, Elliot, Mackenzie and his 7 great nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his “mom and pop” Flo and Alex Rutherford, his father in-law Lou Boudreau and his sister Susie Rutherford.
Curly, Alex, husband, dad, grampa, brother, son, uncle or friend. He had so many names all important for different reason. Throughout his life he met and helped so many. He was always known as the happiest guy. Wherever he went people would know him and greet him with a smile and a handshake. Whether you knew him wearing a suit, a ball uniform or his cut off shorts you knew him wearing a smile. He was most proud of his daughters, who were unquestionably very proud of him. To his daughters he passed on his love for food and cooking and the importance of education so they would be successful in life, his love for animals, and multiple experiences they would never be able to do on their own, but most of all his unconditional love and support. One of the most important things he instilled was to be kind. Something he always learned from his mother “Flo” was to think of others, and how to help even if it was only a little bit. His acts of kindness and generosity had no limits, from his countless charities and foundations he raised money for and supported, to his generosity to anyone he saw in need, he would help. When it came to his wife, Alex was always so supportive and agreeable to what Cheryl’s wishes were always saying, “well girls what would make mom most happy?” Even when his first grandson was born, he was happier for mom to get a grandchild then for himself. His love for his grandson Micky was infectious, everyone knew it. Dad was so proud of his many career accomplishments but nothing compared to his marriage and life he built with Cheryl. Their favorite spot was their back yard, mom by her pool and Curly by the creek.
Through his family, ball, work, community and friends he touched so many lives and will be so missed. When Mom, Shelby and I think about dad and what he is doing right now, we think about him greeting his best friend Roxy (his dog who passed away) walking along a peaceful creek in heaven.

On September 11, 2021 we will be celebrating the life of an amazing soul, Alex “Curly” Rutherford. The celebration will take place at The Keeler Centre 80 Division St. in Colborne from 2 PM to 5 PM. MESSAGES OF CONDOLENCE / DONATIONS

Saddened to have heard about "Curly" Colborne and the Rutherford Dynasty have lost a true soul. I will always remember the quiet moments we spent in the Queens. Conversations that will be treasured for a long time. RIP CURLY

Will Dunk - September 8, 2021

On behalf of my brother Charles and I, we would like to send our condolences to the Rutherford family on the loss of our cherished teammate, manager / coach, and friend Curly! I played ball alongside him and the Flo team back in high school, 15+ years ago or so and my brother Charles become the team's bat boy / equipment manager by default, who absolutely loved working alongside Curly on the ball field and in the dugout. He always gave my brother the best encouragement with lots of laughs followed. Definitely some of my favourite fast pitch memories were on the fields in Colborne and surrounding areas (Grafton). When we won the league playoffs, went to a Jays game, we all had a wild time in the 500 level, leaving for home the bus driver got into a minor fender bender with another bus and Curly sorted that out, just an absolute boss. And always stopped you in your tracks, it's been a few years since I had seen him last, while visiting Cobourg (home), we chatted last near his office and picked up just where we had left off. Missed dearly friend!

This was such a shock when I heard this news this morning. It is true about his smile. I think back to all the years in the same classes with Curly and I don't think he ever did not have a smile on his face. One of the most positive people I ever knew. I remember in grade 8 Curly ran for class president and asked me to be his campaign manager. That was the easiest job I have ever had in my life, because he was the most popular guy in the school, so he had already won the election. RIP Curly.

I have many great memories of Curly from my youth. He was a passionate, devoted person who poured so much into our community, and especially fastball. I can still hear him coaching from third base, encouraging us with his familiar "rock and roll" slogan, and always maintaining a positive, upbeat environment. If I was fortunate to run into Curly in the past 20 years while in Colborne, he was always quick to fill me on how his family was doing and the plans he had for fastball in the area. He was an "all-in" person who I was blessed to know. I am sure he is organizing a ball team in heaven now. Lots of love to your whole family. Brad Rusaw

Ginny (Lawless) Heming - January 4, 2021

To Cheryl, Sydney, Shelby and family, and to my Rutherford cousins Pat, Cindy, Peggy, Paulie and families. I am heartbroken to hear about my cousin Curly who is the same age as me. The bonds that we made as children and teens are still deep in my heart. We shared a ton of laughter and fun and pranks - hanging out at Grandma and Grandpa Lawless's farm in Grafton or at the family reunions at the Rutherford cottage in Colborne. After high school I moved away and didn't see my cousins as much as I would have liked to, however the love of family has no boundaries. I am happy that I got to see Curly in 2013/2014 when I came home to Cobourg from BC to help take care of my parents. We had a huge hug, some laughter and chats and that is one of many memories that I will cherish. I also love animals and creeks so now I will hold Curly in my heart when I wander along creeks and rivers. I would love to hug all of you in person but for now I am sending giant hugs across the miles from British Columbia. Take good care of yourselves and each other. ❤️❤️❤️ Cousin Ginny and family. ❤️❤️❤️

To the family of Alex Rutherford: My wife Heather and I want to express our sadness on learning of Alex's death. I came to know Alex during our 35+ years living and working in Cobourg, practising law. So I knew him as a business man of great integrity, as well as a genuinely warm, friendly individual. For a time we shared office space with him at our office at 203 Durham Street. He had a community-wide reputation for supporting many worthwhile activities with great public spirit. I know you will have a lifetime of memories of happy times, which we hope will comfort you during this time of sadness. Brad Halls, Fergus, Ontario (formerly of Cobourg)

I am so saddened by the loss of Curly..My family took taxi's weekly and got to know Alex and Flo and Snapper and Curly pretty well...we left Colborne almost 34 years ago so didn't see alot of them after that..So many good memories of their kindness and generosity...I could easily write a list...Flo and Alex were loving parents and as a family they worked together played together and I believe prayed together..had many great conversations about church with both Flo and Alex...A few days before my grandmother died Curly was with the ambulance...he was just full of cheer and good will and also made a point of asking how she was doing...? This was very common for Flo as well when a member of our family needed an ambulance...Such a great family..it truly breaks my heart to know this family has suffered yet another great loss...and so has the community...My deepest heartfelt condolences...Just know how many lives you have all touched...

My condolences to the Rutherford family. Curly was larger than life at times. Always doing something special to make Colborne a better place for all. His kind, generous spirit and energy will be missed by everyone. I had the good fortune of being friends, teammates and opponents in our favourite game, Fastball. The things he did for my family and the whole community will be cherished and remembered with great fondness and affection.

Dear Rutherford Family - The prayers from the entire Gallagher Family (Greg, Jim, John, Kathy, and Ann) are with you all. I (Greg) was fortunate to have a 5 minute conversation with Alex on King Street , near his office, just before Christmas/2020. Alex knew my brothers, Jim and John, were very close to his brother, Pat, when they all went to university at Wilfred Laurier. When we spoke before Christmas Alex was "as cheerful and engaging" as always, and we both frequently commented on our strong Irish heritage. I will miss Alex's smile and handshake as I walk along King Street. Friends and families like the Rutherfords are very precious. Greg Gallagher
