Merete Brooks

March 15, 1947 - May 31, 2019

Merete Loystrup Brooks (Jacobsen) passed away at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre on Friday, May 31st, 2019, at 72 years of age.  Taken from us far too soon, Merete was the cherished, beloved & devoted wife to Wayne for 54 years. Their deep mutual love & respect for each other was an inspiration to us all. Precious mother of Ann, Andrew, Catherine (Bruce), Irene (Dennis), Alex, Jason (Ally), Chantelle (Aaron), Bob, Kim, Jordie, Richard & Jennifer.  Merete was so proud of her children & took great joy in their life accomplishments. She & Wayne opened their home to all, with a welcoming smile. Fiercely protective & adored grandmother of Justin, Owen, Connor, Taylor, Erica, Brooke, Braydon, Chloe, Dylan, Sophia, Paige & Mason.  Merete’s grandchildren were a constant source of pride & joy; taking time to celebrate & share those special moments, always parting with a hug, kiss & a ‘love-you, see-you’. Loving sister of Alex Jacobsen (Margie) of Halifax and predeceased by her siblings Birgitta, John and Tom.  Merete was a long-time resident of Cobourg and heavily involved with numerous local organizations volunteering her time with the Northumberland Players, the Cobourg YMCA, and the Northumberland Children’s Aid Society. She was a strong advocate, voice & proponent for children in need, adoption rights and was appointed to a number of Provincial & Federal advisory committees focused on the topic of adoption. Additionally she was a founding member of the Adoption Council of Ontario, the Adoption Council of Canada and a founding member of the Northumberland Police Screening Program.  She saw the good in people & they in turn saw it clearly in her.  The family welcomes guests to a Celebration of Life at the MacCoubrey Funeral Home Reception Centre, 30 King St. E., in Cobourg, Ontario on Saturday, June 15th, from 1 to 4 pm.  In lieu of flowers, those wishing may make a memorial donation to a charity of choice.  Condolences received at www.MacCoubrey.com.

I am so very sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. I babysat I’d say the first three kids back in the 70’s from time to time when you lived on Catherine Street in Cobourg. Our paths crossed a few times over the years and she always knew me and stopped to say hi and have a quick chat. I remember her very fondly. Kathy KrakenbergK2kraky@gmail.com
