M. Jean Ogden Varep

October 29, 1935 - May 15, 2019

Born October 29, 1935 in Blackpool, England, died May 15, 2019 in Cobourg, Ontario. Mum immigrated to Toronto with her parents in 1948.  She married my father, Michael Wormley, in 1959, had me (only child/daughter Anne Livingston - thanks, Mum!), and continued working in publishing  for a time at British Book Service.  She did the stay-at-home-mom thing for a few years, then got her real estate license, and the part-time job she envisioned quickly turned full-time.  My parents parted ways, and Mum made our new home together a warm, fun and welcoming place, with style, grace and plenty of parties and good humour.  My friends adored her.  She was a founding partner in two real estate firms.  Her business partner at Richards & Howe became her life partner and husband.  She and Rick Varep moved to Northumberland County in 1992, making cat-and-dog-filled homes in Castleton, Brooklin and Brighton, working, cooking, entertaining, gardening, volunteering, making stuff, building a house, traveling and sailing.  Rick died in 2015 and Mum moved to Streamway Villa in Cobourg, a small, sunny home in a lovely old neighbourhood (but of course) where she was surrounded by love and care, fun and friends, dogs and pythons, and where she was never bored. Despite some dementia and arthritis, Mum enjoyed quite good health throughout her life.  Her last illness was sudden and fast.  My partner, Scott Kennedy, and I were with her at the end, back at her home, in her own bed. Jean also leaves her stepdaughter, Andrea, and stepson-in-law, Tom Harrison. Thanks and love to her Streamway family, Dr. Loganathan and  the nurses at Northumberland Hills Hospital. Cremation to take place, then a private gathering for friends and family to take place in the near future.  If desired, please make a donation in Jean's name to the Residents' Council at Streamway Villa, 19 James St. W., Cobourg, or your local humane society.  Condolences received at www.MacCoubrey.com Thanks for everything, Mum!  Love you forever.

MESSAGES OF CONDOLENCE / DONATIONS

Lisa & Duffy (Charlie) - June 2, 2019

We were so sad to learn that Jean had left Streamway. She was one of our absolute favourite people to visit. She and Charlie had many lovely conversations. And she was so patient with Duffy. She brightened every visit and we wish we could have spent more time with her. We will miss her dearly. Sending thoughts and prayers to you, Anne. I always admired the love that you and your mom shared. I hope she and Charlie (and the rest of the animals she loved so much) find each other. LisaPS, if there is a public celebration of her life, please let me know. Until then, know your mom's memory will be treasured.

Anne, your poor heart. Like you, your mother was an important part of my growing up. After my parents, she was probably the most significant adult figure in my life. She leaves a hole in the heart of the world. May Jean’s memory be for a blessing always.

Heather Roberts - May 19, 2019

Jean was like a second mother to me as a teenager and young adult. She was so kind, warm and generous. She always treated us like adults even when we weren't acting particularly maturely. I especially remember all the parties she hosted with incredibly delicious food she had made. Her big, welcoming smile made everyone feel at home. She was such a special person! She will be sorely missed.

We've all heard a lot of mother-in-law jokes, but Jean was no joke. She was the real deal. A smart, loving woman who welcomed me into the family from day one, nearly twenty-five years ago. Those years have gone by all too quickly; I guess because we were having such a good time! Although I can't believe she's gone, I treasure the memories of the time we spent together and hope to do her proud for the rest of my life.
