After 96 years of caring for others, Mom passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family at Chartwell Aurora. She is now with her husband Dr. Douglas Gear – both long time residents of Cobourg. Mom’s legacy includes her 5 children Jim (Jan) Gear, Jane (Leo) Cossetto, Judy (Brian) Marshall, Susan Gear, Carol Gear (Scott Andrew) along with 9 grandchildren, Andrew (Sarah), Sean (Erin), Robyn (Lawrence), Ian (Ky), Lori, Lisa (Don), Tyler, Jen (Rod), Chris (Kathryn). In addition Mom is survived by 6 great grandchildren, Cooper, Ava, Sally, Evelyn, Harrison and Reed. Along with many dear friends and former neighbours in Cobourg, Mom will be missed by her sister in law Margaret Burt (Guelph) and the extended Burt family as well as Dad’s cousin Donna Culham (Guelph) and her family. Mom was a long serving member of Calvary Baptist Church and worked with numerous charitable organizations. Her 63 years of service to the Northumberland Hills Hospital Auxiliary was recognized in 2013. Mom was a recipient of the Paul Harris Award, the June Callwood Award as well as the Ontario Volunteer Service Award for her volunteerism. We always teased her that if Cobourg were ever hiring for a Town Cheerleader, she would be first in line to apply and win! Mom and Dad so loved Cobourg. There will be a private Family funeral service in Hillsburgh where Mom was born and raised followed by a Celebration of Life at MacCoubrey Funeral Home, 30 King St. E in Cobourg on Sunday May 26 from 2-4 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to Northumberland Hills Hospital Auxiliary, Calvary Baptist Church or Hillsburgh Baptist Church would be appreciated. To the Gear Family, I was always so fond of your dear mom and both she and your dad were good friends to my parents, Hoot and Jean Gibson. In the last few weeks of my mom's stay on this earth, your mom was a wonderful support and friend through Hospice and she also was helpful to me after the death of my mom, 20 years ago this May 30th. I'm sorry for your loss. I feel so grateful that I had the opportunity to meet your mother at your retirement, Carol. I know that the best parts of her will live on through her children. Your Mom and Dad are of my earliest memories and we had such a fun and lovely time as we all hooked up , by accident for a few years on Baffin Island at Grenfell Hospital , Iqaluit, such additional time with them was a gift. The family is in my thoughts ,always , simply, Gordon, peace & love

Your mom definitely brought a lot of joy to those she touched in her life. She was one of the first people I met when I started attending Calvary Baptist Church and always made me feel welcomed there. We were sad to hear about the passing of your mom. She was a kind, gracious, and generous person, who never sought importance or recognition. Our mom often said she set the gold standard for dignity, elegance, thoughtfulness, and good taste, without seeing anyone as her lesser. My deepest and most sincere condolences on the passing of Mrs. Gear. She was a lovely lady, made everyone feel like they were special, and brought up a wonderful family. I think of Judy and Jane with fond memories of our volleyball and basketball high school days. I'm so sorry you have lost your dear mom.

My thoughts are with the Gear family at this time. I lived on Burke Street in Cobourg in the 1960s and knew Jane and Judy. I believe Dr. Gear was my father's doctor before my dad died in 1957. My family went to Dr. Gear (my Mom, Ivy trusted him completely). Met your Mom many times and she was indeed lovely. What a force they were together.
