Joseph Gerald Cascone

March 24, 1940 - December 16, 2015

On Wed, Dec 16th at Scarborough General Hospital, in his 76th year, of renal failure. Beloved husband of Moira Eileen (Blackstock), loving father of Michael Anthony and of Josephine Elaine, predeceased by Michael Patrick, and grandfather of Anthony Martin. Born 24 Mar 1940 in Toronto. A graduate (1959) of Ryerson's Radio and TV Arts Program, Jerry was a career news film and video editor.  He worked for various TV outlets, including CJOH in Ottawa, CFTO in Toronto, and retired in 2000 after 23 yrs with Global TV. He was known for his speed in the editing room, if you wanted it to make air in the next 5 mins, you gave it to Jerry.   One of his proudest achievements was being instrumental in bringing a union (NABET) to Global and he was a champion of workers' rights.  He joined the picket line at his son's school in support of teachers' rights and would not cross a picket line or purchase from what he considered to be unfair employers.  He was a loyal friend.  He refused to attend an event to which a mutual friend had not been invited.  He did not suffer fools gladly.  Flying was his passion.  He obtained his Private Pilot's License in 1970 and bought his first airplane in 1971.  He logged a total of 1000 hours including to the east coast and south of the border.  He left flying in 1985 not long before being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.  He loved his doberman “Doobie” and trained with him in search and rescue, both here and abroad.  He was a capable electrician.  He was a knowledgeable baseball fan and a true hockey fanatic.  His camera was rarely far from his side, and he studied his genealogy at a time when there was no internet.  He loved science fiction and dark humour. His '03 Dodge Dakota meant so much to him and when he lost his licence following a stroke in '13, he was bereft.  He was a devoted husband and father.  He gave new meaning to the word “husband” in that sense of caring for, loving, supporting, and protecting.  Towards the end, Jerry had a host of health problems that would have done in a lesser man.  He was diagnosed with bone cancer not long before his death but it was the renal failure resulting from diabetes that ended his life.  He was anointed with the Last Rites the week before he died.  In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Canadian Diabetes Association, Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Kidney Foundation or the Alzheimer Society.  Profound thanks are extended to people and agencies too numerous to mention most notably Northumberland Hills Hospital, Chartwell Trilogy LTC in Scarborough and Scarborough General, as well as St. Michael's Church in Cobourg.  Friends are invited to call at MacCoubrey Funeral Home, 30 King Street East, Cobourg on Sunday, December 20 from 2-4 p.m.  Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, December 21 at 10 a.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Cobourg.  Interment St. Michael's Cemetery. Condolences received at www.MacCoubrey.com.  “Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds earth........Reached out and touched the face of God.” You will ever be the love of my life, my "dahlink."
