Jens Karl Simonsen

August 20, 1928 - May 19, 2011

Jens Karl Simonsen; born August 20, 1928 near Odder, Denmark, passed away suddenly May 19, 2011 in Cobourg, Ontario. Survived by his wife of 52 years Doris, Sons Mark (Paulette) of Dartmouth N.S., Paul (Anita) of Haidagwaii, B.C., Chris (Julianne) of Victoria, B.C. and Ben of Colborne, ON. Grandfather of Mathew, Emily, Maria, Jens, Odin, Leif, Rowen, Clarke, Benjamin and Morley. Brother of Ejner (Tove) of Odder, Denmark and special friend Maire Tierney of Peterborough/Ireland. Predeceased by grandsons Eric and Oliver, parents Peter and Anna,, sisters Lily and Gerda, brothers Hans, Arne and Svederick, all of Denmark. As a child Jens lived through the depression followed by World War II in occupied Denmark. He did not speak of these years often but one event that was told of was how their family had provided safe refuge for two French airmen who had been shot down nearby. The Danish Resistance placed them on their farm temporary until the German search patrols had lessened. The French pilots stayed until the end of the war nearly 3 years later. After the war Jens attended Agricultural School and during this time he became involved in team gymnastics and amateur boxing. As a welter weight he won the township title and in gymnastics they performed in competitions and various sporting events in neighbouring towns. After working on large estate farms in Denmark and Sweden, Jens left Denmark to work as a farm hand for George Pyke on Wolfe Island, Ontario for six months. Jens ended up staying for 12 years before returning to Denmark for a visit along with his wife and then 3 children. Jens and Doris bought a run down farm around 1960 and spent the next 50 years adding to it and making improvements until it became the show place it is today, Spring-Wood Farm. Purebred Hereford cattle and good crops were his passion made possible by a supportive wife, a tireless work ethic and good neighbours including Oscar Davey, “Ted” Philp and Hedley Bickle. Jens spent the last years close to the farm he loved and visiting area farmers. We thank Tom Markovski, Norman Kerr, Soren Degn, Peter Simonsen, Don Carruthers, Don Gardner and Al Frank. As requested by Jens, there will be no funeral service or visitation. Rest assured he is at peace. Condolences to www.MacCoubrey.com
