Sled, John Elson Captain D.F.C C.A.F October 11, 1923 September 10, 2009 ?A Gentleman and Loving Father? John Sled of Cobourg Ontario passed away on September 10th 2009 as a result of an aggressive cancer that he met head on with dignity and courage with his family by his side. John was born in Lumsden Saskatchewan to Charles Graham Sled and Mary Alice Sled (nee Elson). Loyal husband of 60 years to Muriel (nee Mawhinney), father to Jim Sled (Vivian) of Whitby, Leanne Arsenault of Montreal and Janice Sled of Shanty Bay, Ontario. Loving Pappa of Jamie and Jennifer Sled of Whitby and Ray J. Arsenault of Montreal. Great Grandfather to Cecilia Sled. He is survived by his sister Ethel Jones. John enjoyed a successful career as a pilot with the R.C.A.F. and the Canadian Armed Forces. He later flew corporate jets for Exec Air before retiring. John was awarded the distinguished flying cross November 4th 1944 having flown 38 sorties (180 hrs) between March 15th and August 9th 1944. He was a humble, brave, and courageous, loyal, caring individual. He made sure to tell his family in the final days of his life that he had a good long happy life and he was very proud of his three children. The family would like to extend their appreciation of the care and support given by the staff at the Palliative Care Unit at Northumberland Hills Hospital. John's love of animals was a special trait.
