James Henry Jubenville

February 13, 1949 - February 16, 2023

JUBENVILLE, James Henry, “Jubie”, at the tender age of 74, passed away suddenly on Thursday, February 16th, 2023, at the Northumberland Hills Hospital. Jim was born on February 13th, 1949, in Windsor, Ontario, adopted and raised by his wonderful parents, the late Regina (Brunelle) and Joseph Jubenville. In 1961, his family moved from Windsor, to the small town of Cobourg, Ontario. They settled into their first home on Burnet Drive and eventually moved into a house on White Street built by Jim’s dad, Joseph.
Out of high school, Jim was hired at his first full time job working at Totten Sims Hubicki as a surveyor. He also worked at Pursey’s Shell and drove cab for Cobourg Taxi. In 1974, he applied for a letter carrier position and was hired by the Cobourg Post Office. Jim loved being a letter carrier. Being outdoors and seeing people everyday were the best aspects of the job. Jim was reliable and hard working. You could often see him wearing his shorts and long socks in below freezing temperatures. After 35 years working as a letter carrier, he decided it was time to finally hang up his mail bag and retire in 2009.
In the late 60’s Jim, found the love of this life, Mary (Robillard). They got married April 4th, 1970 and had two daughters years later. Mary worked at the TD bank in Cobourg. Everyone knew Mary! Mary had a strong passion to help people and she loved her job. After 47 years, she retired from the TD Bank and continued her passion of helping people and volunteered her time at the Northumberland Hills Hospital. Unfortunately, Mary passed away unexpectedly June 23, 2018. She was the rock and the glue of the Jubenville family.
Jim was an avid fisherman, on the boat, standing on shore or on 2 inches of ice. He had the “touch” his friends would say, he always knew where the “sweet spots” were for good fishing. He volunteered his time with the annual fish lift every year and was recently recognized for his 40 years of dedication and received an Environmental award from the Town of Cobourg.
He was a dedicated member of the Cobourg Legion. He volunteered his time coaching fastball to numerous children, including his two daughters. He used his strong organizational skills and assisted with the Water Front Festival setup, working the beer tent, parking cars in the Legion’s parking lot just to help raise funds for the branch. He enjoyed playing euchre, crib and participating in out of town tournaments, representing the Cobourg Legion.
Jim was a well known Montreal Canadian fan, a sportsman, and a pioneer of local sports. He started many local hockey, and baseball leagues within the community. He introduced Men’s “Lob Ball” in 1975, which consisted of only 4 teams, and within two years it expanded to 24 teams. He went on to introduce Mixed “Lob Ball” and became a well known pitcher. Jim looked after the Cobourg Lakers hockey league, Grafton Old-timers and started the 35 and Over league (that still exists today). He took over the Cobourg Ball Hockey league and ran the league until he turned 60. He will always be remembered as a president, coach, great organizer, mentor, teammate, and a treasurer of some league. You name it Jubie did it!
He was very competitive in any sport he played and could always be found at a ball field or an arena.
Jim will be deeply missed by his two daughters, Christine (Chris) and Christelle (Dylan). He was a loving, supportive and very proud Papa to Carter, the late Makayla and the late Cameron. He will forever be remembered by his brother-in-law Jack Dowle and sister-in-law Terri, as well as his nephews Jack (Dawn), Gary (Erin) and his niece Lesley. Jim was a loving great uncle to Andrew, Hayden, Trent and Raya. The family would like to extend their most sincere gratitude to all of the Nurses and PSWs at the Northumberland Hills Hospital, including David McKay and Dr. Haukioja. As per Jubie’s wishes, cremation has taken place and, in the future, there will be a private service where Jim will be laid to rest alongside his wife Mary at St. Michael’s Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cobourg and District Sports Hall of Fame, OFAH - Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters Fish and Wildlife Fund or the Charity of your choice.
A special heartfelt “Thank you” to Jim Baitley, Norm Hall, Clarence Devereaux and family, the Dowle family, and the Port Hope Panthers Hockey Club.

Cecilia A Nasmith - February 23, 2023

I have plenty of friends with Jubie stories from hockey and ball but, for me, I loved the way he would contact me annually to publicize something else close to his heart - the Pratt's Pond fish lift. Because of man-made changes at the dam, the fish would no longer have been able to get upstream to their spawning grounds without the help he organized. It just shows the little things were important to him too, and I always had a great deal of respect for his efforts on this.

Sad to hear of Jubie’s passing. It was only 61 years ago that we met. First memory was Jubie standing outside our kitchen and calling out “ Garry, you coming out to play” Normally around supper time. My mom would say “ is that Jubenville out there again” Over the next several decades we played hockey, baseball and football; sometimes on the same team, mostly as competitors. Jubie definitely contributed to our sporting community. Our thoughts and condolences to Jim & Mary’s beautiful daughters Christine, Christelle and their families.
