Carol Yvonne Ethel Mattson

February 21, 1940 - March 28, 2024

Carol Mattson passed peacefully at Northumberland Hills Hospital surrounded by the love of her family Thursday, March 28, 2024 at the age of 84. She is the proud mother to her children Patrick (Cheryl), John (Laura), Sherry (Philip), and Mark (Chantal). Beloved Granny to Mike (Simone), Melissa (Justin), Cory (Sydney), Krista (Rick), Sierra (Meir), Chance (Rickellie), Skye, Joshua (Grace), Jeremy (Logan), Caden (Natalie) and Emma. A very special Granny to her 11 great-grandchildren. Carol will be missed by her siblings Elgie, Roberta, and Morris, as well as numerous cousins, relations, and friends. Her gentle demeanour and kind ways were balanced by her indomitable spirit and inner strength. She will be greatly missed and forever cherished by her family, friends, and community.

Carol was born on February 21, 1940 to Art and Jane (nee Marsden) Smith in Fenella, Ontario. Carol’s love of her community, Alderville First Nation, was evident throughout her life. Although Carol was primarily raised in Toronto, any opportunities for visits to spend time with her grandparents, Norman and Sarah Marsden, aunts, uncles, as well as her numerous cousins and friends in Alderville First Nation, where her roots ran the deepest, were held dearly. She would proudly always call Alderville First Nation home, so when she was able to move to the community in the late 1980’s, it was truly coming home for her.

Being a people person, Carol worked as a Bell Operator, a bank teller, a pharmacy and store clerk and she also enjoyed time spent working as crossing guard for elementary school children. Carol was a natural teacher with a tender heart having been a volunteer and helping to support others while volunteering with children facing unique challenges, to volunteer-librarian in her children’s school library, to Meals on Wheels. Carol’s avid love of nature, animals, and books was well-known.

Carol loved her family’s presence and all occasions whether a birthday, Christmas Dinner, Thanksgiving, or Easter. When she was able to host, she pulled out all the stops to create an atmosphere to which none could compare: her table settings, decorations, and her amazing food and delicious desserts were always so special.

Through her later years, Carol became adept at texting allowing her to keep tabs on her large family with daily updates that were necessary for all. The addition of photos to the stories being relayed added an elevated dimension for Carol’s enjoyment of all activities and equally, for her family to receive them from Carol as well. Carol was always happy to hear of what was going on in her family’s lives and looked forward to hearing of all their accomplishments.

Carol’s family would like to extend their most sincere thanks to all those who have been involved and helping to care for the Sacred Fire, to all those within the community who have generously donated food, and to all who have expressed their sympathies, as well as Alderville First Nation for the space to honour her.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Alderville Community Centre Saturday, April 6, 2024 from 1:00 – 3:00 PM. The family asks that everyone attending continue to share all of their special memories of Carol and remember her for the proud, strong and wonderful woman she truly was.
