Johnston Scott

January 4, 1937 - April 27, 2019

John Scott of Meaford, and formerly of Cobourg, passed away peacefully at Grey Bruce Health Services in Owen Sound with his family by his side, on Saturday April 27, 2019 at the age of 82.

Born in Londonderry, Northern Ireland on January 4, 1937, John was a son of the late Johnston and Louise (nee Edgar) Scott.  As a young man he won a scholarship to attend Foyle College, graduating at age 17.  He joined the Police Force in Northern Ireland and then after a year decided he wanted to branch out and move to Canada.  So in 1957, he immigrated to Toronto, Canada where he started working as a Clerk for CN Railways.

John then met the person who would become the love of his life, Linda.  They met at a dance in Toronto and in 1959 were married near Linda’s hometown in England.  Returning to Canada and moving to Montreal where John then began his career at Imperial Tobacco, while also attending McGill University and ultimately becoming a Registered Industrial Accountant.   John and Linda’s 4 children were born in Quebec.

John, Linda and family then made a brief move to Sarnia, Ontario before settling in Cobourg, Ontario in 1971.  John ultimately held several Senior Management level positions at General Wire and Cable (Belden) before retiring in 1993.  In 2015, John and Linda sold the family home of over 40 years and moved to Meaford, Ontario to be closer to family and grandchildren.

As a young man, John loved playing rugby and curling.   He also enjoyed gardening, playing cards to “win” and was a member of the Cobourg Lawn Bowling Club.  He loved the water, whether it was swimming, boating or sitting watching the waves.   John and Linda also had the chance to take several trips to their home countries of England and Northern Ireland and traveled to Portugal, Spain, Morocco and Gibraltar. Further travels were enjoyed with John’s sister Ann and her husband Ronnie to the Canary Islands and across Canada and the United States.  John also enjoyed spending holidays and time at the cottage with his children and grandchildren.  John and Linda recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary along with their family.

John was the cherished husband of Linda Scott (nee Mathews) of Meaford.

He was the proud father of Karen Strong (Craig) of Rockwood, Sharon Harbottle (Dean) of Clarksburg, John Scott (Laurie Cupsky) of Clarksburg, and Pamela Scott-Bovens (Michael) of Whitby.

John was the loving ‘Grampa’ of Madelene, Brandon, Hillary, Scott and Grant, and ‘Great Grampa’ of Tiyanna.

He is survived by his sisters Ann Taylor (Ronald) and Gillian Ramsey (Christopher), both of Northern Ireland.  John will be remembered fondly by his brother-in-law Peter Richardson (late Pamela) and by his many nieces, nephews and their families.

Family will receive friends at the Ferguson Funeral Home, 48 Boucher Street East, Meaford, ON   N4L 1B9 on Thursday, May 2, 2019 from 5 until 7 p.m.  A private family service will be conducted on Friday, May 3, 2019.

He will be sadly missed, remain in our hearts and be fondly remembered always by his family and extended family.  ‘Rest in Peace, dear Dad’.

Our family would like to say a special thank you to Wendy for her kindness, friendship and support.  Also thank you to Dr. Klages and the doctors and nurses at the Owen Sound hospital for their support.

As your expression of sympathy, donations to the Owen Sound Hospital Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated and may be made through the funeral home.   www.fergusonfuneralhomes.ca
