Everett Luther Cole

May 7, 1921 - July 6, 2017

Everett Luther Cole was born on May 7, 1921, the middle child of a family of two older sisters - Mildred and Gena, and two younger siblings, Bruce and Gwen, and his parents, Lillian and Luther.  Everett attended Glourourim Public School,  SS # 13 of Hamilton Township until grade eight.  He then remained at home to help on the family farm, the farm purchased by his grandfather Tom Cole.  As the other siblings left home to pursue their dreams, Everett felt a strong pull to honour his father's wishes and stay behind.

At the age of nineteen, he met Ferris Cheyne, the love of his life, at a Sunday evening service in her home church, Gore’s Landing United. At the time, he was living in Peterborough and working at Quaker Oats. After 6 years of dating, Everett and Ferris were married on September 20, 1947 in the little church where they had first met.

During their dating years, one of their favourite things to do was to go to different places and hear evangelists preach. It was at a meeting in Toronto that they realized they needed to turn their lives over to God and rely on His leading in their lives. They never looked back.

After their marriage, they settled on the Cole homestead near Bethel Grove. From the very beginning, they put God first in their marriage and every aspect of living.  A big part of that commitment meant helping to start a Bible-preaching church in Cobourg where Dad served as deacon for over 60 years. He served the Lord with great enthusiasm - leading worship, teaching Sunday School, helping people in need, showing hospitality to scores of people. His desire was to encourage others in their walk with God by word and example.

People have said that farming was in his blood and that was certainly true, but it was a struggle to make the farm viable, to feed a family of seven, to keep up with new farming methods all the while honoring his responsibilities at church and caring for aging parents.  He came to accept and respect farming as part of God's plan for his life.

Dad taught us seven children that you work hard and you don't give up when the going gets tough.  You don't walk away from your faith, your family or your church.  You cry and pray and then get up and expect God to speak to you and work in your circumstances. His example of a simple, unwavering  faith and prayer has left a legacy that has meant the world to us and we have relied on his prayers for our lives and for the generations that will follow.

Your children, Linda, Sharon, Larry, Carol, Donna, Tom and Sid are so grateful, Dad, that you chose to "wholly follow the Lord". You chose to rise above the circumstances of your life and keep your eyes on your Lord and let Him change your heart. Your children, grandchildren and great grandchildren will be forever grateful.  And the blessings continue....
