C. Gordon King

December 30, 1911 - May 8, 2003

King, Lt. Col. Charles Gordon Peacefully at Extendicare, Cobourg, on Thursday May 8, 2003, in his 92nd year. Gordon King beloved husband of Grace (Mitchell) for 65 years, much loved father and father –in-law of Carol and Desmond Quirk of Sydney, Australia. Brother-in-law of George and Jack Mitchell of Cobourg. Born in Uxbridge, Ontario on December 30, 1911, he attended primary and secondary school there receiving 2 scholarships to the University of Toronto where he studied honours Latin, Greek and Ancient History. He graduated with the Gold Medal in his class, going on to Teachers’ College. In 1935, Mr. King began teaching at the Cobourg Collegiate Institute. His teaching was interrupted by WWII. Gordon served initially as a Captain with the 22nd Medium Battery NPAM, he retired his command as Lt. Col and C.O. of the 33rd Medium Bty Regt. in 1951. Gordon returned to Cobourg as the Vice-Principal of CDCI, one year later he was promoted to Principal where he remained until his retirement in 1972. An active member of St. Andrew’s Church, Cobourg, elected elder in 1955 also a long time member of the Cobourg Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow. A memorial service will be held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, King St., West, Cobourg, on Wednesday May 14 at 1:30 p.m. Private interment Cobourg Union Cemetery. A reception to follow at the C. Gordon King Centre (corner of King St., W. and Ontario St.) Friends may call at the MacCoubrey Funeral Home 30 King St., East, Cobourg on Tuesday from 2-4 and 6:30-8 p.m. Comrades of the RCL Br 133 Cobourg will assemble at the funeral home on Tuesday evening at 7. In lieu of flowers donations to the C. Gordon King Public Library or to the Northumberland Health Care Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
