Katherine Lynne Upper

March 29, 1944 - March 27, 2024

Kathy passed away peacefully after a courageous 7-year battle with cancer, surrounded by her family, just two days shy of her 80th birthday. Born in London, Ontario to Elizabeth and Doug Kennedy, she was the devoted older sister to Janet and late brother John. Kathy forged enduring friendships through her adventures as a dedicated French teacher, story teller, memory keeper, quilter, singer and pie maker. A loving mother to David (Alynn) and Stephen (Leanne) and adoring Nanny K to Maple, Noelle, Sam & Jake. Her presence and laughter will be forever missed by Jim (Jamie) Upper, loyal husband of more than 50 years. The family would like to thank all the doctors for their compassion and expertise: Dr. Paul Caldwell, Dr. Orit Freedman, Dr. Vickie Martin, Dr. Mark Niglas, Dr. Sunit Das, Dr. Kent Tisher and Dr. Francesco Mulé. A heartfelt thanks to the staff and nurses at Ed's House. Cremation with visitation at MacCoubrey Funeral Home, 30 King St. E. in Cobourg on Tuesday, April 9th, 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A memorial service will be held in Cobourg at St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Wednesday, April 10th, at 11 am with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to St. Peter’s Anglican Church or to Ed’s House Northumberland Hospice.

Jackie Kennedy Gedling - April 8, 2024

"Katherine has been a cherished Canadian Cousin of mine (our Scottish grandfathers were brothers) over a great many years and on the (sadly too few) occasions that I managed to visit my cousins in Toronto, Cobourg or London, she always gave me such a great welcome and was always so kind and caring and always had such a positive attitude to life. I have been in awe as to how she has managed to face her devastating last illness with such courage & fortitude and such cheerfulness, despite everything she must have been going through. I offer my deepest sympathy & condolences to Jim, her dear sister Janet, her sons David & Stephen and their wives & her grandchildren Maple, Noelle, Sam & Jake. I have so appreciated being kept up-to-date over the years, with news of family members via letters & emails (with photos) latterly, from 'across the pond’ with glimpses of Canadian life, fascinating & intriguing to read and often very different from customs or traditions in England. I will miss her so very much and cherish such fond memories of her, both when I have managed to see her & dear Janet & Jim & her lovely family in person and latterly sharing such wonderful email exchanges with her. They have been very precious times. With love and prayers, Cousin Jackie Gedling (in England).”

Very ,very sorry to learn of Kathy’s passing . She was a wonderful teacher with a passionate zeal to do the very best for her students . But even more important , she was a caring and generous person who walked the talk . Her support and care for fellow colleague Dorothy Hampton was laudable . Our condolences and prayers go out to Jim and family .. Peter and Suzanne Delanty.

Dearest Jamie & Family . . . thoughts and memories of Kathy bring an immediate smile to my heart and soul. While I did not spend that much time with her, each moment was one of frivolity and laughter . . . good food and sips! What a gift she was and will always be. May your family forever rejoice in her life and find strength in being together. With love, Laney P.S. Best "speech from the Bride" ever!!!!!! P.S.S. Best sister-in-law ever to Patti (feel my love).

Dear Jim and Family, and Janet, I was very saddened to hear of Kathy's passing. I met Kathy at Shout Sisters where we were both members of the "low maintenance lows". She had the greatest sense of humour and was always ready with a story and her beautiful smile. I will miss her and the world will be a little less bright without her in it. I'm sure they've already recruited her for the heavenly choir🎶🎶💗. Until we meet again my friend. Love Deb
