Peacefully at Extendicare in Cobourg on Friday, March 22, 2024, Iola Bleekman (nee Cone) at 100 years of age. Iola was born September 12, 1923 in Combermere, Ontario, the daughter of Frederick Charles and Nora Harris Cone. Iola’s family moved to Cannifton and Belleville, but summer vacations were spent at the farm on Papineau Lake. Iola married John Morley Bleekman who predeceased her. Iola is survived by her son William and her daughter in law Kathryn. Her brother Lloyd still resides in Belleville, however she is predeceased by her siblings Louise, Edeline, Nancy, Russell, Frederick, Reginald and William. She is survived by her numerous nieces and nephews as well. Iola was scary smart. She was tough, and compassionate. She was fun and funny. Restless and patient. She was completely herself all of her life, doing things the way she wanted. Unless you knew her, you wouldn’t know under that quiet, calm exterior that she was a pistol, a feisty, funny, independent lady. She was truly original, a beautiful character. Over the past couple of months her health slowly deteriorated. A special heartfelt thankyou to the entire nursing home staff for the care, kindness and love they showed her each and every day. None of her caregivers and their attention will ever be forgotten. With the skilled help of the nursing staff Iola was kept comfortable and pain free till the very end. Cremation with spring interment at Elmwood Cemetery in Corbyville. Those wishing may make a memorial donation to a charity of choice.
